This is regarding the June 1 article, ''Chicago now 5th in 'sustainable' city rankings; jumps 3 spots on environmental list.''

Environment reporter Gary Wisby mentions that a recent survey released by SustainLane.com ranked Chicago as ''No. 2 in regional public transportation, based on miles per capita.'' The Regional Transportation Authority is striving to be the No. 1 regional public transportation system in the nation.

The RTA is currently developing a strategic plan to shape northeastern Illinois transit service over the next decade and beyond.

During the strategic planning process, the RTA, along with the cooperation of its service boards -- the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra Commuter Rail and Pace Suburban Bus -- will assess what is needed to maintain the current transit system and determine how new investments can best improve the region's overall transportation system.

The strategic plan will provide strategies with goals and objectives to guide the RTA as it lives up to its responsibilities granted to it under the RTA Act.

We encourage the public's input as to what will help make our six-county transportation system the best in the nation. Go to www.rtachicago.com and click on our Strategic Plan link for more information.
