San Antonio ranks No. 21 nationally on a list of cities deemed to be most sustainable by a Web site promoting sustainable living in the United States.

The criteria used to determine sustainability included examining a city's commitment to public health, its emphasis on creating a strong local economy, and citizens and city officials working together to make positive, thoughtful choices for the long-term benefit of the city and its residents.

In Texas, Austin ranked 14th and Dallas ranked 24th. El Paso was No. 31, Houston No. 39, Arlington No. 41 and Fort Worth, No. 46.

Portland, Ore., was ranked most sustainable, and Columbus, Ohio, was ranked least sustainable.
